In the Shadow of Princes
The Reynards are one of the oldest noble families in Noirlan and have long maintained one of the most opulent city manorhouses in town. Their ancient riches were made and in the fishery and fur trades, and the legacy of the family’s many years of business can be seen everywhere in the Longview District they call home. Reynard Island, where much of the family’s warehouses and shipping operations are headquartered, is sometimes called Reynard Town, as it operates as a city unto itself.
With a web of supplemental services and auxilliary companies under direct or indirect family control, the Reynards maintain an extremely self sufficient operation. Indeed, they even independently operate one of the largest shipping piers in Noirlan at the coastal narrow of the Westwego penninsula. As the result, the Reynards’s merchant fleets operate exclusive of the Noirlan Port Authority and thus pay no fees to the the city .
The current leader of the family is Lyris Reynard, who assumed control of the family’s affairs and Crescent Chamber duties after the death of her aged husband Valentine Reynard. She married into the family when Valentine, a recent widower and considerably older than her, became smitten with Lyris’s charms. That was 21 years ago and not long after Valentine’s two sons were lost during a whaling expedition in search of the Leviathans of the Silent Sea. Lyris has since reigned as the sole heir and grand matron of House Reynard.
Her daughter Salome, the only child Lyris conceived with Valentine, is Lyris Reynard’s pride of life. She dotes on Salome and forgives her daughter the worst of indulgences. In spite of Lyris’s affection for Salome (or perhaps because of it) the three young sons of Lyris Reynard competitively vie for their mother’s attention by acting to further the family’s interests. Unable to outdo the charmed status of their wayward older sister, the brothers, Stephane, Vincent, and Huegan, seek to excel eachother and win Lyris’s favour. They live on the hope that one day their mother will come to her senses and choose one of them to be the Reynard heir.
Since the recent downfall of the Shades of Lucan cult, Salome has been a wanted fugitive. Her involvement in Oliver Chastain’s nihilistic cult has marred the reputation of House Reynard, but Lyris refuses to turn on her beloved daughter. Using her clout in Noirlan’s governing Crescent Chamber, Lyris has been working to receive pardon for Salome, whose wherabouts remain unknown.
